How to prepare for your C&P exam

A compensation and pension (C&P) exam is a chance to describe how a condition affects you. Knowing what to expect helps you walk in calm and prepared.

What a C&P exam is

A C&P exam is an appointment where a clinician asks about your condition and how it affects your daily life. It is not a treatment visit and not a test you pass or fail.

The clinician may ask questions, review records, and in some cases do a short physical check. Your job is simply to describe your experience honestly.

Before your exam

  • Re-read your own statements so your story is fresh
  • Note your worst days, not just your average days
  • Bring a short list of your main symptoms
  • Plan to arrive a little early so you are not rushed

During your exam

  1. 1

    Describe the full picture

Talk about how the condition affects you on bad days, not only when you feel your best.

  2. 2

    Be specific

Use real examples: tasks you had to stop, sleep you lost, help you needed.

  3. 3

    Ask if you are unsure

If a question is unclear, it is okay to ask what it means before you answer.

Describe your hardest days

Many people downplay their symptoms out of habit. Be honest about how things are when they are at their worst.
